Grapes of Wrath Fri Jul 31 8:30pm

Presents:

The Grapes of Wrath

Economic disaster, unemployment, bank repossession, homelessness, hunger, fear and hatred of immigrants- sound familiar? Add the Dust-bowl, labor camps, intrastate border cops and you've got 1930's America!

From Oklahoma and elsewhere, dispossessed farmers migrate westward to California. After terrible trials en route they become little more than slave labor. Among the throng are the Joads who refuse to knuckle under, struggling to survive and make their way in an increasingly unfamiliar and unfriendly world. A classic battle for justice and labor rights in the face of tyrannical bosses and brutal repression. Based on the classic and controversial novel; by John Steinbeck.

New York Times Article

Santa Cruz Guerilla Drive-In was recently in the New York Times.
http://wheels.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/06/17/drive-ins-are-back-but-its-a-secret/

It definitely seemed a bit weird that we appeared in the automobiles section, weird enough that it demanded a response:

As a member of the Guerilla Drive-In collective in Santa Cruz, I can say that these types of renegade movie theaters are increasingly popular. Currently, we have over 1,100 people on our email list and regularly screen films for audiences of 50 to 100 people.

It is true that the traditional, commercial drive-in still exists (as many posters have pointed out), but free, do-it-yourself drive-ins, like the one in Santa Cruz, are popping up all over the country, and these guerilla theaters are challenging the fundamentals of the commercial drive-in business.

Our screenings have always been explicitly car-free. We have always shown the movies in fields or parks where cars are not able to enter. The result is an event that feels very much like a night-time picnic. People bring blankets that they spread on the ground. They usually bring snacks and drinks (sometimes with extra to share). Some people even come early and loll around in the grass, chatting with their neighbors.

At our screenings, we build in time for neighborly interactions, and challenge people to get up and meet other folks who are attending. Amazingly, the result is almost always positive. Without being confined to a car, people feel free to get up and wander around, make connections with others, build community. It is like being at the beach and inviting people to leave the insularity of their blanket behind and get to know the others around them.

In fact, Guerilla Drive-In is one of the few places in Santa Cruz where people can meet and mingle with others outside the realm of consumerism. In our society, most people who want to meet others find themselves at a bar. The result is that socializing becomes synonymous with drinking, and meeting someone becomes synonymous with buying them a drink. At Guerilla Drive-In, people meet each other by passing on a bag of popcorn that they made at home or by sharing freshly baked cookies.

People want these kinds of authentic connections. They want to get out of their cubicles, get out of their cars, they want to lie under the stars and share a laugh or a cry with others. That is the reason the guerilla drive-in movement will continue to spread.

I ♥ Hucakabees

July 17th

Determined to solve the coincidence of seeing the same conspicuous stranger three times in a day, Albert hires a pair of existentialist detectives, who insist on spying on his everyday life. With their help Albert examines his life, his relationships, and his conflict with Brad Stand and the notoriously un-environmental Huckabees, a popular chain of retail superstores.
Location: Under the Soquel Ave. Bridge

The Grapes of Wrath

July 31st

Economic disaster, unemployment, homelessness, hunger, the dust-bowl, labor camps, all in... 1930's America! From Oklahoma and elsewhere, dispossessed farmers migrate westward to California. After terrible trials en route they become little more than slave labor. Among the throng are the Joads who refuse to knuckle under. Based on the classic and controversial John Steinbeck novel set in the Salinas Valley.
Location: Under the Soquel Ave. Bridge

La Misma Luna
(Under the Same Moon)

In the hopes of providing a better life for her son, Carlitos, Rosario works illegally in the U.S. while her mother cares for Carlitos back in Mexico. Unexpected circumstances drive both Rosario and Carlitos to embark on their own journeys in a desperate attempt to reunite. Along the way, mother and son face challenges and obstacles but never lose hope that they will one day be together again.
Location: Beach Flats Community Garden (Raymond & Park Pl) by the Boardwalk

Man on Wire

August 28th

Insight into tightrope walker Philippe Petit's daring, but illegal, high-wire routine performed between New York City's World Trade Center's twin towers in 1974, what some consider, "the artistic crime of the century." Winner of the Academy Award for best documentary.
Location:
Swift Ave and the RR Tracks, by Mission St (west-side SC)

Un Poquito de Tanta Verdad
(A Little Bit of So Much Truth)

September 11th

Location: Beach Flats Community Garden (Raymond & Park Pl) by the Boardwalk

Network

September 25th

"I’m mad as hell and I’m not gonna take it anymore!" Media madness reigns supreme in this scathing satire about the uses and abuses of network television. A TV network cynically exploits a deranged ex-TV anchor's ravings and revelations about the media for their own profit.
Location: The Sentinel parking lot next to the main library

The Third Man

Oct 2nd

Challenging the laws that make public space off limits to the public after sunset, we move to San Lorenzo Park to show the only film ever shut down by the authorities (three times). In honor of Wes' birthday, we show his candidate for best film ever made. Great filmmaking in glorious black and white, a twisting plot, a haunting setting in post-war Vienna, a menacing Orson Wells, and fantastic zither music by Anton Karas. A grand late-summer GDI celebration with a whole park filled with food, drink, blankets, people, parents, young ones, elders, punk kidz, workin' folk, and students.
