[guerilla-drive-in] Hopium: Confronting Fascism in the Obama Era Fri. May 29th at SubRosa

HOPIUM:  CONFRONTING FASCISM IN THE OBAMA ERA

An evening of radical films with subMedia's Franklin Lopez
aka the stimulator

Friday May 29th, 8pm at SubRosa, 703 N. Pacific Ave.
$5-$10 suggested donation (no one turned away)

An evening of radical films including:

-Excerpts from a film in production called "END:CIV.
END:CIV is the first feature film to analyze our culture's addiction to systemic violence, industrial capitalism and environmental exploitation, as evidenced by the current epidemic of poisoned landscapes and shell-shocked nations. Based on the best-selling book by Derrick Jensen, and the runaway success of director Franklin Lopez, END:CIV asks:  if your homeland was invaded by aliens who cut down the forests, poisoned the water and air, and contaminated the food supply, would you resist?  This showing is also a fund raiser for continued production of this project.

-GROUND NOISE & STATIC-
A video report on the protests that occurred in connection with the Democrat and Republican National Conventions.  Ground Noise & Static is a manifesto. We went to Denver and St. Paul to take the pulse of the movement. Corporate media would cover the platitudes and posturing of the politicians, we were interested in something else, a story hidden in plain sight, captured in the now-classic street chant, "This is what democracy looks like."
-Plus other short films and mashups, including excerpts from the radio/web/TV show
"It's the End of the World as We Know It and I Feel Fine".

Please join subMedia founder, director and producer Franklin
Lopez
(aka The Stimulator) as he steps out from behind the
talking boxes to
tour us through a video montage of his
latest works, mixing culture
jamming, news, radical
commentary, music and action.

an event by BEING JOHN BROWN and BARRIOS UNIDOS

Being John Brown is a group of activists committed to challenging white supremacy. We wish to see a world in which white privilege and oppression of people of color have been completely eliminated, and our purpose is to help bring about that world. We believe that white people have a responsibility to actively confront white supremacy, as well as to take action in solidarity with organizing led by people of color. Being John Brown exists in order to organize in our communities for these purposes, and to support activists and organizations with similar goals.

Being John Brown is open to anyone who agrees with these principles.

[guerilla-drive-in] SLINGSHOT HIP HOP Friday May 15 8pm @ Railroad Tracks with the Santa Cruz Guerilla Drive-In and Being John Brown

Being John Brown with the support of
Santa Cruz Guerilla Drive-In presents:

Slingshot Hip Hop
Slingshot Hip-Hop
a film by Director/Producer/Editor Jackie Reem Salloum

Friday May 15th 8pm
Swift Street Railroad Tracks
Westside Santa Cruz

"Slingshot Hip Hop braids together the stories of young Palestinians living in Gaza, the West Bank and inside Israel as they discover Hip Hop and employ it as a tool to surmount divisions imposed by occupation and poverty. From internal checkpoints and Separation Walls to gender norms and generational differences, this is the story of young people crossing the borders that separate them."

The movie has won veritable shit-tons of fancy awards but better than that, you might notice some parallels between the struggles in the middle east and what we see happening in our own communities.

About Being John Brown:
John Brown opposed slavery with militant resistance. Learning from this example, this group discusses antiracism in our own lives, work, and communities. We share strategies for confronting racism and the behaviors and institutions that allow it to continue to derail our movements and divide our communities. To build genuine solidarity, white people can and should discuss race and racism amongst white people--honestly and often. What do you think?

PLUS challenging ideas of public space, confronting racism, an enchanting urban wasteland location, great company, and a guaranteed good time!

BRING blankets, pillows, anything you need to be comfortable in the great outdoors, friends, food and drink to share.

URBAN WASTELAND LOCATION: S on Hwy 17 to Hwy 1, Hwy 1 north to Mission St, L on Swift Street, the site is on a wall near the rail road tracks right behind Kelly's Bakery and Bay Federal Credit Union, also accessible from Fair ave.

[guerilla-drive-in] Stolen Car Reportback

Again, this isn't GDI related, but since you haven't heard anything except stolen car news from us for a while anyway, I thought I owed you an update:

Jen's stolen car was recovered.  It was found dusty and unlocked on the East Side.  While my sleeping back, a bike rack, and a library book were removed, everything else including our CDs were still in it.  Weird.

Thanks to GDI friend Giles for loaning us a car for the duration.  He comes through as a hero again.

(As an aside, my bike was stolen last night, so if you have a sweet, tallish mountain bike in good condition, feel free to lay that on me.  Thanks.)

GDI Love,
Wes

PS We've been meeting about this season's films and schedule, so stay tuned after the Anarchist Convergence.
